Program Description

In the high-priced real estate market of Essex County, NJ, many families need help bridging the gap between low or moderate wages and the high cost of renting a home. The Irvington Housing Authority (IHA) provides assistance to help these families obtain safe, quality and affordable housing through its Public Housing Program. IHA owns and manages 670 public housing units, located in Irvington, that provide reduced rents for very low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities. Tenants pay 30 percent of their income as rent.

IHA has accessible and adaptable housing available to meet the special needs of persons with disability, including those with mobility, hearing and/or vision impairments.  

IHA also provides "reasonable accommodations".  That means that a unit owned and operated by IHA may be changed to accommodate a person with a disability.  For example, if you are hearing impaired, IHA will provide a fire alarm with a strobe light.  It also means that people with disabilities can take full advantage of IHA services, including living with greater ease in their homes.  

You may make a request in writing for a “reasonable accommodation” any time during the application for housing process — but you are never required to tell IHA that you or a member of your household has a disability.
